Sport at Worcester 

 

Worcester Students' Union operate a number of varied sports teams. As well as offering a great social platform many of these teams compete nationally against other universities as part of the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Leagues and Championships. Below you will find a bit more information about each of the current sports teams operated by Worcester Students' Union along with details of how to contact them.

If the sports team you are interested in does not have a contact email listed below then contact either of the sports staff at the Union and they will help you get in touch with the club you are interested in.

American Football (Worcester Royals)

This year is a great time to get involved with our American Football team, the Worcester Royals. After a couple of formation years learning the game and establishing themselves the Royals this year will compete in the British Universities American Football League, a competition which will bring them head to head with other established University teams including the Birmingham Lions and Plymouth Blitz. The team are always looking for new members whether you're a beginner or the next John Elway.

Badminton

A popular student group, the Badminton club caters for all standards from those just looking to play the game to those wanting to compete against other universities. The club operates both a men's and a women's team, with both playing in the BUCS Leagues, coming up regularly against other universities from Nottingham Trent to Oxford Brookes.

Basketball (Men's)

If you've stepped foot in the UniversityS ports Hall you will have seen the banners acknowledging Worcester's success on the basketball court. With strong links to the National League side Worcester Wolves our Men's Basketball team has flourished in recent years with the 1st team crowned as BUCS Champions in four of the last five years. The 2nd team is also of a high standard and regularly competes against the 1st teams from other universities.

Basketball (Women's)

The success of the men's basketball team has rubbed off on our women's team as well, with this club making significant strides forwared in recent seasons. Last season two members of the club were selected to represent England and the club will be looking to help more players to reach that level in the coming year as well as helping new players discover the game. The women will be looking to improve on last season's mid-table finish this year.

Boxing

Following on from the success of individual students in the boxing ring, Worcester Students' Union has established a Boxing Society in the last few years which continues to be a populara ddition to our student groups. This society is not just for the up at 5am, chasing chickens, running up steps hardcore boxers, but can be a great way to improve fitness.

Cheerleading

Before you say anything, its not like Bring It On OK. The University of Worcester Cheerleading Squad have been active for a number of years. Initially giving support to other clubs and societies as well as community teams - they perfromed at the Worcester City v Huddersfield Town FA Cup match a few seasons ago - the squad now compete in national university cheer competitions. Cheers is a highly active and demanding sport and one of the fastest growing in the country. The squad are looking for both male and female members to join their team.

Climbing & Mountaineering 

Another relatively new group the climbing and mountaineering society has a particular interest in getting students out into the wilder world. The group embark on regular trips to help members pursue their interests in climbing and mountaineering and in the past year have visited Wales and the Lakes to hit the rock-face.

Cricket (Men's)

Despite the obvious handicap of being a summer sport in a predominantly winter based academic year the cricket club continues to thrive and grow. Throughout the year the club keeps its members active and involved with regular training and nets sessions, not to mention well attended social events. And all the hard work pays off in the Spring as the men's 1st and 2nd teams compete in the BUCS Leagues. These one-day limited overs fixtures give the university the chance to take the field against the likes of Birmingham and Nottingham.

Cycling (inc. Mountain Biking)

The cycling society is the group to be a part of for anything pedal-powered, excpet maybe pedalos. As well as traditional cycling the group caters for those who favour heading off-road with a keen interest in mountain-biking as well. In addition to recreational and training rides the group also look to compete in BUCS competitions against cyclists from other institutions.

Equestrian 

The equestrian society is a fun and friendly society for both riders and non-riders. Even if you've never ridden or haven't done so for years or just have an interest in horses then the society would love for you to get involved. Group members get to ride every other week at local stables and are split into sections of similar ability. As well as these training rides the society also competes against other universities, taking part in BUCS championships.

Football (Men's) 

As you may expect from the 'national game' men's football represents the largest of the Union's sports clubs with five teams competing in the BUCS Leagues against other institutions and a sixth side competing in the local Saturday league against clubs from across Worcester. Not content with that scale of operations in recent years the club have also begun to develop a futsal side to compete at the University Championships. Given the range of the club's activities they are always on the look out for new members.

Football (Women's)

Women's Football is followed just as keenly as men's on campus and the club has developed and grown significantly in recent years. The club now operates two competitive teams in the BUCS Leagues giving more female students the opportunity to play the game at University. As well as the match action the club also has an active social side as well ensuring any new members will be made to feel right at home as part of the squad.

Hockey (Men's)  

The Men's Hockey club currently operates one team in the BUCS Leagues, keeping them active with regular matches on the astro-turf in the heart of the campus. The team train regularly and also have an active social element, making them very much a work hard, play hard team who are always after new members.

Hockey (Women's)  

Like their male counterparts the Women's Hockey club are an active presence on campus and also reflect the effort they put into training and matches with similar commitment to the social side of things. The Women's team however are a larger presence on campus feielding two sides in the BUCS Leagues who regularly face opposition from across the country right in the middle of the university on the astro-turf.

Jitsu

A martial art based on a moving system of locking, throwing, striking and hold-down techniques Jitsu has been a steadily growing society on campus for some years. The group meet regularly to train and practice and are keen to improve their membership numbers this year.

Kayaking

One of our younger student groups the Kayaking Society has only been in operation a couple of years and aim to help people of all abilities get out on the water and experience the sport. As well as regualr practice sessions the society also looks to enter their members into competitions throughout the year.

Netball

Nothing but net... and ball. Netball is one of our most popular student groups on campus with four teams currently representing Worcester in the BUCS Leagues and competing against the likes of Oxford, Nottingham and Derby. As well as competing at many levels the club are just as committed off the court with an active social scene that helps all their members to feel very much part of the club.

Rowing

 The Rowing Club has been active at the University since 2004, but has really developed in recent years thanks to a link with Worcester Rowing Club. The club welcome members of all backgrounds, from beginners looking to try something new to experienced rowers looking to compete. The club have competed in BUCS events and also in more prestigious rowing competitions such as the Henley Regatta.

Rugby Union (Men's)

Worcester is of course in the heart of rugby country and so its little surprise that we boast a well established and well run Rugby Union club. Their are two men's teams competing in the BUCS Leagues and with a very committed bunch of players are another club very much of the work hard play hard ethic. The 1st team compete in the Premier B Division North, travelling as far afield as Leeds, Newcatsle and Durham whilst the 2nd team are also of a strong standard and compete against the 1st teams of many other institutions.

Rugby Union (Women's)

Not to be outdone by their male counterparts the Women's Rugby Union club also operates one team competing in BUCS at a strong level. The side get in some travelling as well facing the 1st teams of Nottingham Trent, East Anglia and Lincoln. The club are alwsys keen to help new members get to know the sport and get active representing their university.

Swimming

There may not be a pool on campus but this has not hampered the swimming team who have progressed in recent years thanks to the acheivements of some talented individuals. The group looks to compete actively in BUCS Championships and give swimmers the chance to pit themselves against the best student competitors out there.

Tennis

A group still in its infancy the tennis club will be looking to grow this year with a potential influx of new members. The club will offer the chance for members to play tennis regularly whilst also building up toward entering BUCS competition in the future.

Trampolining

The Trampolining society is made up of a number of students from all abilities, from complete novices to experienced bouncers. The latter of these groups have the opportunity through the society to go on and compete in the sport, including BUCS Championship events. The society train and practice regularly, allowing all members to enjoy the sport, and the social aspect of the group, at their own pace.

Taekwando

Our newest sports group, the Taekwando society have been formed to give students a way to get involved in the martial art, both on a participation level and a competitive level. The Taekwando group are looking to participate in a number of events organised by the British Students Taekwando Federation in the coming months.
