"It is absolutely imperative that every human being's freedom and human rights are respected, all over the world"
Johanna Siguroadottir, former Prime Minister of Iceland and first gay head of state
LGBTQ+ History Month takes place every February in the UK and celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and non-binary history. This year, we're working with the LGBTQ+ Network and other student groups to bring you various resources and events throughout the month.
Why is LGBTQ+ History Month important?
Homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia are still prevalent, even in the UK, and throughout history, LGBTQ+ individuals have been stigmatised and discriminated against. LGBTQ+ History Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate all those who paved the way for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community, and who continue to do so today.
"Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it's a good place to start"
Jason Collins, first openly gay player in the NBA
