Wildlife conservation is crucial for protecting biodiversity and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the incredible variety of life on our planet.
By safeguarding habitats, protecting endangered species, and promoting sustainable practices, we can help maintain the delicate balance of ecosystems. Conservation efforts not only support wildlife but also contribute to healthier environments for humans, ensuring clean air and water.

This April, Worcester Students' Union is hosting the Campus Wilds nature photography competition!
We’re inviting students to capture the beauty of campus biodiversity by taking a photo and tagging us, as well as DM-ing it to us on Instagram.
Your photo can feature any aspect of nature found on campus.
At the end of April, a favourite photo will be chosen by our Students' Union President and the student will be notified to collect their prize.

Worcester Students' Union actively promotes and supports nature-based wellbeing activities, recognising the proven benefits of spending time in green spaces for mental health. The St John’s Campus provides an accessible environment for students and staff to engage with nature, including the fortnightly birdwatching walks led by Dr. Mike Wheeler, a lecturer in Biological Sciences. These walks offer a unique opportunity to observe local bird species and enjoy the mental health benefits of nature.
Practical tips for participants:
- Bring binoculars if available but observing with the naked eye is still beneficial.
- Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather.
- Consider keeping a journal to record observations.
- Engage all your senses to fully connect with the environment.

If you prefer to enjoy the wildlife on campus at your own pace, either solo or with friends, the University Mile offers plenty of opportunities to connect with nature. As you walk the circuit, you'll encounter various wildlife, from RSPB stands helping you identify bird species, to bug hotels and ponds in the conservation area where you might spot a variety of insects.

We are excited to share that a new Student Union Bug Hotel has been built in the Conservation Area at St John's Campus, along the University Mile. This eco-friendly project offers a unique opportunity to explore and connect with nature, providing a home for local insects while also supporting biodiversity on campus. Feel free to visit and enjoy this beautiful addition to our campus!
World Wildlife Day, celebrated in March, honours the diverse species that share our planet and raises awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife and their habitats. It's a day to reflect on the need for conservation and take action to ensure the survival of species for future generations.
